There are almost no documents that allow for the exact dating of the Monastery of Montederramo and its early years. Due to this, there are various hypotheses about its origin. Most historians say that the history of the Monastery of Santa María de Montederramo begins with the donation by Dona Teresa of Portugal in 1124 to Abbot Arnaldo; this document includes the term Rovoyra Sacrata. However, other historians indicate that this document is false, dating from the late 12th or early 13th century, although the origin of the year 1124 could still be correct.

The original location of the monastery is also in doubt. It could have been in Seoane Vello (now Graña de Seoane), which is 7 km from Montederramo; it was later moved to its current location. Although the dates of this move cannot be specified, it is considered proven that it took place.

The monastery initially belonged to the Benedictines and was dedicated to Saint John, later becoming part of the Cistercian order. The disentailment of 1835 led to the monks abandoning life in the monastery.
